Dances for Solidarity is a project that co-creates choreography with individuals incarcerated in solitary confinement. Since founding the project in 2015, I have facilitated collaborations with incarcerated people across the United States through a methodology that involves trading sections of written dance scores through the mail. What results is a piece of choreography developed from inside of a 6’x9’ prison cell, transmitted across prison walls, and danced by people who have returned home from prison. The public performances of this work invite audiences into a conversation around punishment, justice, redemption and oppression, all shaped by the first-person experiences of people with lived experience inside the U.S. prison system.
Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.
Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.
Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
