About this project

Their cause

I am creating space for black and brown queer creatives to network, build community and self-promote. In the black community, there is constant pressure to (re)present a particular image: heterosexual, eurocentric ideologies, educated, proper-speaking, and more. It doesn't always align with whom one is, who we are. These spaces allow us to strip away our "passing," outer-protection, self-destroying images to explore what makes us feel alive, comfortable, and seen. I am directly connected to it because I am a Black, Queer, Genderqueer, Performance Artist. I am everything my birth community looks at and wonders why. Why is this acceptable? Why is this needed? Why do they think they belong in our space? Why? Why? Why? With these carefully curated spaces, I intend to show them why and how it all intersects.

How they'll use their space

I will curate a one-day event where black and brown creatives can self-promote, build community, and network amongst other creatives. It will be set-up as a pop-up shop/bazaar where our vendors will be 95% Queer People of Color and People of Color showcasing their work: visual arts, hand-crafts, jewelry, clothing, skincare products, candles, and more. During the event, a DJ will create an inclusive ambiance through music and local artists: Rappers, Singers, Spoken Word Poets, and other Performance Artists will perform. I will even allow artists in the crowd to sign-up to perform. This event is all about creating a safe and inclusive space with a focus on this specific community. As a community, we will raise funds to support younger QPOC creatives and advocacy groups like The Door, Stigma Unbound, and Trans Women of Color Collective.

What is Space for Change?

Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.

Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.

Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
