Black Influence on Jazz Dance

About this project

Their cause

We are creating a music video that provides education the historic Black influence on American Jazz Dance. Many people recognize choreographers names such as Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins, but names such as Josephine Baker and Katherine Dunham are virtually unknown. What we know now as "American Jazz Dance" was stolen from Black ancestry. It is time that we honored their creation of this art form that is celebrated on Broadway stages today. We have commissioned 8 BIPOC artists to write an original song, choreograph and film the 3 minute music video that will be filmed in St Paul, MN June 2021.

How they'll use their space

What is Space for Change?

Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.

Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.

Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
