About this project

Their cause

Cultural institutions in the Indian-American community, particularly those of patrilineality, play a fundamental role in perpetuating gender discrimination and notions about gender-appropriate behavior. Using the ancient Indian classical dance form, Kuchipudi, we hope to create a series of four videos that explore the consequences and realities of some of the culturally ingrained institutions that disempowers women. These include: (1): Menstruation is seen as impure, and women are often separated from place of worship during this time. (2) Women who are widows are traditionally expected to pursue a spiritual, ascetic life and not remarry. (3) Obedience is a virtue Indian women are imbibed with since childhood. Women are taught to be obedient and submissive to their husbands, even if it leads to an act of violence. These are real issues that are still prevalent in the Indian-American community in the United States. We hope to create some awareness and education about these pertinent issues.

How they'll use their space

We will use the space to create a series of 4 videos, followed by a livestream discussion panel to address these pertinent issues. The panel will include some of the leading women Indian artists in the United States.

What is Space for Change?

Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.

Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.

Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
