About this project

Their cause

Growing up as a mixed race, girl, I was always looking for representation of myself through television, movies or photographs in magazines. Unfortunately, I never found myself being represented in the media and it was really confusing and weird to think, "Why are there only white kids on the screen?" It made me believe that I wasn't worthy of those things. As I got older and started to take on work as a photographer, I was constantly challenged by model agents and photo editors who weren't interested in my photographs of Black hip hop artists or Asian models in my portfolio. I was literally told that I needed to photograph "white girls" and then those people would consider working with me. It was a hard reality at first but I knew if I wanted to be a photographer, I had to play by their rules. So for 3 straight years I photographed mostly caucasian models. It was fine but it wasn't what I wanted to focus my attention on. Eventually, I moved to NY and I was able to embrace themes and subjects that felt authentic to me and my creative process. This led me to work for a large photo agency where I get to be part of a company that distributes images for magazines, blogs, and advertisements. With this expansive platform, I am able to submit images that reflect what our country really consists of, people of all races, colors and ethnicities.

How they'll use their space

If I win, I will use the space to continue shooting lifestyle and portrait photographs for different assignments I get through my main agency. Most of the models I photograph are people of color so by using Peerspace as my background, I will be able to connect my concept with locations that have great lighting and beautiful interiors.

What is Space for Change?

Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.

Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.

Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
