About this project

Their cause

Around The Way Dreams is an on-going and immersive study on the layered effects of being an Around the Way Girl. My project stems from my childhood admiration of Queen Latifah in Living Single and Big Les on BET’s Rap City. In my mind, these were Black women who exuded an indefinite cool. They were smart, approachable, hard-working, and, most importantly, the aura about them commanded respect because it was themselves they respected. Using photography and film, this offering celebrates Black women who have manifested from the dreams of a little girl from not so long ago…or from last night. The next generation is surely coming and it is our duty to offer guidance. I hope to offer guidance but also gain insight from older generations of Around The Way Girls. The Around the Way Girl is someone you know. She could be you.

How they'll use their space

If chosen, I would use the space to conduct interviews and photo shoots of selected women and men to share their experiences as Around the Way Girls and as individuals who love them.

What is Space for Change?

Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.

Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.

Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
