About this project

Their cause

I’m with Visually Speaking, a DeafQueer owned-and-operated ASL instruction company in Seattle. We’re currently offering 6-week-long online classes that meet once a week for an hour. We teach all age groups through open and private classes, including adult ASL 1 & 2. All of offerings are currently online. Soon, we will go back to regular business and the first thing we want to do is host an event for people to use ASL together. The Deaf community has really suffered through the pandemic. The 3 dimensional language has been reduced to a flat screen. Many Deaf are eager to see their friends again. In the past, Visually Speaking has hosted variety of events for the Seattle ASL Community. We supported local businesses by hosting in bars and restaurants. Now, we could use a little help getting back to that!

How they'll use their space

Hosting for Deaf folks is really easy, they start chatting with each other before they get thru the door. I won’t need ice breakers, etc. it will be about 3 hours. If I find Deaf talent, I’d be glad to host them on a stage. But this is basically a social hour for ASL.

What is Space for Change?

Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.

Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.

Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
