The dance piece I've been working on is about highlighting how capitalism and the government system effects different individuals. I had hope to highlight my dancers unique experiences with racism, finding their voice, and speaking up for those who may not have the strength to withhold difficult conversations. As a person of color who's grown up in a low-income area, my experiences with opportunities were at a huge disadvantage. I soon realized that my peers whom felt the same way also had unique experiences to share. The goal of this piece is to take an audience on a journey of what it feels like to be stuck within the system, being silenced, and finding the courage to advocate for oneself. My hope that it will touch others in a way to inspire an audience to hear our voices as well as find the fire within to also be outspoken. This is my first film piece as I've done many in person works that have been performed at American College Dance Association, Bay Area Dance Exchange at Stanford, and University Dance Theatre at SFSU.
I've been hoping to find spaces to film my work and submit it into the SF Dance Film Festival. Having an indoor space to re-create lighting to accentuate and bring my vision to life would be very powerful.
Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.
Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.
Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
