About this project

Their cause

Joshua's Stage - a nonprofit organization in Austin, TX - is the premiere enrichment program for children ages 3 to 18 and adults with a wide range of special needs - such as autism, Down syndrome, ADHD, speech and language delays, emotional disturbance, cognitive delays, and more - featuring after-school programs, camps, workshops, birthday parties, individual enrichment programs, and performances including activities in theatre arts, improv, arts and crafts, dance, music, photography, create-a-story, and Showcase. Participants enrolled in programs at Joshua's Stage have the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity, increase their self-confidence, and build their social skills in a warm and welcoming environment. Joshua's Stage raises funds to support families who are in need of financial assistance so that their child with special needs are able to participate in our programs. I am the Founder and Executive Director for Joshua's Stage and I am living my dream of enriching the lives of individuals with special needs through the arts. I have been working with individuals with special needs since I was in eighth grade, and as a child I wrote stories, plays, and dreamed of being an actor. I am a previous special educator of 9 years, a former assistant principal, and I worked in the private sector for 9 years in project/program management where I acquired my MBA. Joshua's Stage encompasses my background, experiences, and my passion for serving this underserved population.

How they'll use their space

Joshua's Stage will use the space for our 2021 June Theatre Arts and More! Summer Camp for Middle and High Schoolers with special needs. Participants in the program will have the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity, increase their self-confidence, and build their social skills. Participants will engage in a summer of fun activities featuring theatre arts, improv, arts and crafts, music, dance, photography, and create-a-story. Participants perform in an original play and more in the weekly Friday Showcase for their family and friends.

What is Space for Change?

Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.

Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.

Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
