I am writer and director of Black Girls, which is feature-length documentary illustrating what it means to exist at the nexus of America's evil twins of racism and sexism - combatting a lack of media representation due to European beauty standards, being hypersexualized and invisiblized, and to find healing through sisterhood and extended networks of mutual care and support. Black Girls explores the generative nature of Black women and girls as an instructive journey into what could be - serving as a powerful treatise of Black girl divinity.
The support of Peerspace will allow me a cost effective option for selected scenes to be included in the documentary, namely our first scenes establishing the universe and scenes illustrating the beauty of Black girls in natural settings in contrast to dominant narratives that place them in inner cities.
Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.
Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.
Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
