About this project

Their cause

I wanted to highlight Black people. Black artists. Black culture. Black life. I honestly don’t know if K will win. I don’t think I will, lol. My Moms doesn’t either to be real with you. I started filling this out on the 12th and just exited out of it. I’m apart of Alpha Phi Alpha but this is solely me. I don’t have any YouTube videos or anything of the sort. All I have is Instagram and Twitter. Yet I opened my email and saw another email again encouraging me to apply so here I am. Juneteenth is a holiday for Black people. I don’t think we celebrate it hard enough. Honestly the event is a big thing. During the event though is when I want to propose to my girlfriend. I figured a Juneteenth party/event is something that would throw her completely off guard. Especially if I throw the event she has reason to believe to get dolled up and jump fresh. I have a few friends who are artists and photographers so I wanted to highlight their art and photos amongst others. I believe an art gallery is the ideal place. I’m big on Black history. Like—really big. Like I use PTO for Juneteenth since it isn’t a paid holiday for my job like July the 4th is. I have always said I hated doing such a big thing on a holiday but what better day than the day my people got their freedom? I get to celebrate Black history and Black love all at once. My friends seem to think a masquerade art evening (or brunch) works perfectly. To sum this up—I would love for this to be at an art gallery, have up Black art, celebrate Black love and propose during the event.

How they'll use their space

I’d like to bring in some artists, maybe have some food and/or drinks as well. Just have a spot to highlight Black artists and Black art. Maybe have some quotes from favorite Black leaders from history or at least their pictures. I hate coming to someone incomplete I just haven’t figured that out. I just know I want to celebrate those close to me and propose to be transparent lol. By the way, if I’m wasting your time with this—my bad for real.

What is Space for Change?

Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.

Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.

Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
