About this project

Their cause

Growing up I struggled with my identity which is why it's important that I create art that serves to empower women to love every piece of themselves. I was raised in a single-parent household. The sacrifices that my mother has made for me inspires the art that I create and want to share with the world. I earned my B.A from the college of the Holy Cross, a social justice institution, where I majored in Theatre with a concentration in Women and Gender Studies. I enjoy serving my community and I have a passion for photography. I want to tackle women's rights by using my photography as a form of activism. I am unapologetically black and feel empowered to be a woman! My photo series is a tribute to Black Excellence through which I will spotlight local public figures in my community. I believe people in my community deserve to be uplifted and should see images of public figures that reflect all shades and sizes. I hope that these images will inspire my community to continue to strive for black excellence.

How they'll use their space

I will utilize the space as a photo studio. I will invite models to embody public figures that exemplify Black Excellence. There will be individual and group shoots. I will also have a makeup artist and photo assistant present during the shoot. Each photo shoot will recreate an iconic moment from the life of a public figure. I will bring my own camera equipment and plan to utilize the lighting gear and backdrops at the photo studio. The public figures I select will highlight important issues impacting women of color.

What is Space for Change?

Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.

Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.

Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
