For every ten moms that are living in low-income areas around the Bay Area, five are unemployed, eight have not graduated from college, two are unhoused, and only three would say they are living a healthy lifestyle. MOCHA (Mothers of Color Healing Association) By Marie’s mission is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization focused on helping women of color thrive mentally, physically, & financially. We believe that healing starts with sharing resources. Our vision is to become a virtual hot spot for resources in the Bay Area. Between our events and online presence, we bring together the community (people and organizations) to improve access to appropriate services and vital information needed to lead healthy, choice-filled lives. If you ask us, it all starts with mom. MOCHA's mission is to close the opportunity gap. I am a Black mother from Oakland who is constantly reminded of the power of education within the complexities of poverty. I am a Black mother who refuses to be satisfied with her own success and is bringing opportunity to more people.
On July 18, MOCHA’s 12-week fellowship will begin to provide ten women of color with job training, resume tips, lifestyle coaching, housing consultations, etc. As the grand finale, the women will receive a special treat: a makeover from a professional Bay Area makeup artist, a new headshot, a celebratory dinner and more. The finale would purposefully take place on Sunday, October 10, World Mental Health Day, marking our third annual event. MOCHA does this event every year in partnership with other organizations like Blue Shield, the Golden State Warriors, City of Oakland, etc. We would love to utilize a PeerSpace location this year to show your support for mothers of color in the Bay Area. A nice, clean, beautiful space is the first step to making this evening so special and intimate for these hardworking mothers.
Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.
Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.
Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
