About this project

Their cause

I just want my community to be recognized. Filipino Americans I believe still have not received the proper recognition that I believe we deserve. Being Asian American or person of color we still have to experience racial stereotypes and it frustrates me. As proof, I went to my mechanic awhile ago to get my car serviced and this middle white aged man looks at me then looks at his wife and I hear him tell her “hey honey, watch my wallet, don’t want it to grow legs and walk away”all while looking at me smiling like it was a funny joke. I felt very upset because of his assumption of me being a thief who would steal his wallet just cause I'm the only person of color in the lobby of the dealership. The art industry in my opinion is no different, it is still biased when it comes to people of color. Rarely do Filipino American artists receive any type of recognition within the community, and I hope that with my work I will help even out the playing field in the fight for racial equality. I am a First generation Filipino American who wants to inspire others like myself who feel underrepresented. I want to give them hope even when things get challenging we push through and fight the good fight. I want to be a voice for my fellow Asian Americans who feel suppressed, I want to be the Artist addressing the xenophobia building around Asian Americans lately, and most importantly I want to be the Filipino American Artist for my Wife and Kids. My style is all about diversity and It can be seen in the color palette, it is noticeable in the images I use expressing unity, and raw emotion.

How they'll use their space

This space will be used to curate my first solo art show. It will include several paintings, videos installations and photos of my work.

What is Space for Change?

Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.

Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.

Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
