About this project

Their cause

As a Black transgender and non-binary person, it's hard to ignore the constant violence that happens to my community members, specifically by women and femme siblings. I feel it is my duty to at the very least assist in the protection and safety of my community. Last year, I founded a mutual aid effort called, This is NOT a Solution, or also known as TiNaS (like the common name). TiNaS kits are a protection pouch containing 1 pepper spray, 1 self-defense keychain, 1 $25 Uber Card, 2 Drink Test Cards, 1 dental dam, 1-2 Latex-free condom(s), 2 latex condoms, 1 portable phone charger, and 1 cloth mask. They are FREE to obtain for Black Trans Women, Femmes, and Non-Binary people. If you are in the greater Seattle area, you can pick up a kit at Repair Revolution, Gay City: Seattle's LGBTQ Center, and Open Books. Or if you are in other areas and don't have access to these places, you can request a TiNaS kit to be shipped to you or to a UPS store near you by filling out the form on my website. This is a project to provide self-defense and safety tools and to Black Trans Women, Femmes, and Non-Binary individuals in response to the continual violence that occurs to our communities. Mirroring the mutual aid efforts of communities across the country and globally, while putting Black Trans Women, Femmes, and Non-Binary Individuals first in accessing self-defense, we change and challenge the dynamics of the trickle-down effects of oppression, which normally, severely impact Black Trans Women, Femmes, and Non-Binary People. To date, we have distributed over 150 kits to 11 different states (including Washington) and continue to make and distribute kits.http://www.ebobarton.com/tinas

How they'll use their space

My project is to record videos of Black transgender and non-binary people teaching folks how to use the items in the kit as well as doing interviews to humanize my community members. I hope that the interviews will unlock discussions and conversations around the needs of Black transgender and non-binary people, the truths, and how folks can better show up to protect us in the public spaces. I hope the videos are shared with Black transgender and non-binary people in communities I have no access to, such as rural areas or in places that don't know how to obtain these items.

What is Space for Change?

Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.

Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.

Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
