About this project

Their cause

Our main cause is to address food insecurity within marginalized communities by provide healthy, low-cost food alternatives. Our secondary goal(s) and causes are to amplify and liberate the black suppressed voice through art and social justice education. Originally from Richmond, VA, I relocated to Los Angeles in 2016 to pursue my doctorate degree. While here I witnessed first hand how food insecurity within marginalized communities impacted everyone from a holistic standpoint. Without adequate food and nutrition the brain and human motivation functions at a slower pace. I also noticed that unlike the east-coast there were very few art museums or street art in general, as someone who once had a suppressed voice I know the importance voicing your thoughts in the form of art (drawing, painting, graphic design, poetry, music) is extremely helpful.

How they'll use their space

Blacker The Berry Juicery is a hybrid juice bar that offers healthy food alternatives to person(s) living within marginalized communities, after school art programming to amplify and liberate suppressed black voices, and social justice education to aide in the fight against systemic racism in the US justice system. The goal is to create equitable opportunities for men and women of color by addressing various inequitable sectors. The funding will be used to help produce content that shows and highlights the impact of tech, art, justice, and food inequities on people of color and how an equitable future would look if people of color were given access to these same resources.

What is Space for Change?

Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.

Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.

Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
