Curated from the hearts and minds of Black women, the Black Beauty Archives encompasses the history of our past, documents the present while imagining the future. Our mission is to preserve, document and celebrate the history of Black Beauty through cosmetics and beauty culture. Objects include rare vintage beauty ads, magazines, press photos, stamps, and beauty tools. Exclusive oral histories from beauty professionals and creatives alike are added to our collection on a bimonthly basis. BBA will continue to add to these collections, expanding our archival holdings to reflect the dynamic aesthetics of Black Beauty. As we continue to expand our mission to make resources accessible, our team needs access to spaces to record content, conduct business meetings and host virtual educational seminars. As the Founder and Principal Archivist of BBA, I am committed to creating free educational content to ensure the world knows the contributions of Black contemporary artists. Although we are living in unprecedented times, BBA is committed to sharing positive and joyful contributions of Black artists into the world. Part of social justice work also means highlighting Black cultural and artistic movements free from the white gaze, understanding that Black folks lives are filled with rich culture, innovation and artistry without any influence or trauma from White Supremacy. We've seen enough brutality to last a lifetime, it's time to shine a light on Black joy, artistry and innovation to see ourselves in the future.
If Black Beauty Archives is chosen, our team will utilize the space to record high quality, educational videos for BIPOC communities. Access to these spaces will allow BBA to record and conduct oral histories, record artistic techniques and shoot digital content highlighting archival & artistic practices. We will also record multiple educational videos and live stream virtual events and educational seminars. It is long overdue that BIPOC communities have access to virtually learn how to archive and document our history.
Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.
Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.
Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
