About this project

Their cause

I am the Co-Organizer of Signs for BLM, an organization that encourages activism through creativity. Handling weekly collections of signs made by the community to distribute at protests surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement. While abiding by COVID-19 safety regulations, collections are conducted in a contactless/curbside pick-up manner. The signs are made by those who are unable to attend protests for a number of reasons, ie: immunocompromised, disabled, pregnant, immigration status, anxiety, etc. and are then distributed by our team to folks on the ground at protests. Contributors sign up for pick ups through the link on our social media account. Organizers handle all logistics including: google forms/spread sheets, creating weekly routes for pick ups, social media communications. As a Black women living through times like this, it was imperative that I do something to aid my community in this fight. I am an artist and use my art as protest. Being involved with signsforBLM has been a way for me to use my passions for the greater good. I am constantly inspired by our contributors and our team for bringing beauty and empowering messages to the streets.

How they'll use their space

Our hope is to use the space as a gallery for the signs we have collected over the past 10 or so months as well as a space to hold interviews for our team memebers and possibly a few of our contributors. We receive weekly donations of about 300-600 signs from our contributors. We are envisioning the signs displayed in a creative space and using footage to promote our organization on a website we’re building and on social media platforms. We would like to reach more and more folks and spread the word that Black Lives STILL matter and we all have a part in this fight. We want to bring awareness to the different ways you can contribute to the cause.

What is Space for Change?

Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.

Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.

Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
