We are very passionate about increasing literacy for both adults and children in the Black community. We want to create a positive environment for children to read and collaborate together and let adults know that it’s not too late to improve literacy skills. The Right Kind of Black Girl’s Book Collective encourages Black women to use their imaginations and expand their minds. We would really like to expand our events into the Black community in the Greater Los Angeles area to multiply our impact. Ultimately, we strive to foster a love of reading and a baseline level of literacy in the Black community. Not only will this introduce our community to stories and information only accessible through reading, but it will also narrow the achievement and wealth gaps that plague the Black community at-large.
We will use the space to host our first-ever book exchange event. The event will connect book owners who are interested in trading their used books with other book owners. Attendees will enjoy new books without spending money and without the need to make more space at home for storage. We envision readers commingling, sharing their favorite authors and books with other readers, and genuinely building a community that inspires creativity and endless imagination. We will also collect information from attendees who need, or who know someone who could benefit from, free literacy services.
Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.
Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.
Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
