About this project

Their cause

I am creating a documentary that showcases Black people living carefree in different parts of Chicago that are looked at as the "hood" or "Rough" and often forgotten or looked down upon. These are voices that have been shut out and silenced. These same neighborhoods are the first ones to be impacted by gentrification. As the director and Producer, my goal is to make these beautiful Black folks shine across the screen and give them the voice they deserve to have.

How they'll use their space

The space will be used to conduct interviews and get b roll. I want to film the subjects in a totally different environment that they've never been in inside of the city. II want to capture that "awe" moment. The space will also be set up with plants all around it to feel like a lush green house mansion. The goal is to film the entire project inside of this space and use it as a lure for the subjects to open up and tell us how amazing the space is. This is used twofold because it also showcases how we are at a disadvantage as Black people as well.

What is Space for Change?

Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.

Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.

Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
