The cause we are working on is centering holistic well-being within social impact work. At Maven, we invest in talented queer and trans people of color and allies to build more resilient communities that thrive in transition, crisis, and tragedy. We recognize that with all the work that these individuals do, establishing a practice around self-care and making it integral to the work that they do—not separate to, is vital. Maven Moves encourages social impact leaders to take scheduling time for wellness, meditation, yoga, and breathwork just as seriously as one would a conference call with funders. It is just as—if not even more important. We recognize that going out and participating in certain practices is not a viable option for many within our community, especially with the current concerns around health and safety. We are creating these free wellness videos to be apart of our wellness hub for the community to give individuals an accessible option to their practice. Personally, as a queer and black individual myself, wellness and self-care was something that I frankly did not have the bandwidth to seek out when I was deep within the movements and work that I was apart of. The idea of having high-quality wellness videos at the tip of my fingers, where I feel represented within them, is something that I never had but would have made my initial experience in social impact work feel all the more stable.
If we receive the Peerspace Spaces for Change sponsorship, we will use the space to film more wellness videos for our community, ranging from yoga instruction videos, tai chi instruction videos, gong meditation, to breathwork. All of these videos are free for the community to absorb, and help further our mission of creating a lively, welcoming experience that celebrates all bodies and identities while in the comfort of their own homes.
Peerspace is on a mission to bring people together. We believe it is impossible to achieve that goal unless we also fight for equality and access to resources in the communities we serve.
Having a space to gather, create, and exchange ideas is an important part of any movement. In order to magnify voices that are often quieted, Peerspace will sponsor venues for people who challenge prejudice and fight for social justice and equality.
Each quarter, we will sponsor space for three projects that are relevant to our community. These projects can range from fundraisers and educational initiatives to art exhibits and photo series.
